“But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.”
Amos 5:24
Dear God,
Justice. Justice. Justice. This is what we cry out all the day long, Lord, as we pray for a more equitable world for the people whom you love so deeply and infinitely.
God we pray that we might deeply care. That we might care for our creation, that we might care for the trees, the land, the deserts, the forests, the parks, the people who walk on this earth and who are your beloved children. Teach us Lord to truly and rightly do this in our actions, in our hearts, in our thoughts, in our words, in how we love, in when we speak, and in erasing our silence.
May we care for our siblings by fighting for equity. May we feel called to do these things every single day. Every day until justice rolls down like an ever-flowing stream. That stream that God created. This world which belongs to our creator and for which we are called to treasure and love.
God we lift up all of this as we lift up the particular places where your creation hurts.
This week as we saw that Derek Chauvin was convicted of the murder of George Floyd in the United States, we felt for a moment a small piece of justice in a country and world where black and brown bodies are so violently mistreated. We know that one decision will not change everything and that your children will continue to live in fear as so many more of your children are mercilessly mistreated and killed. We pray that we all may continue to struggle to make a difference and to see justice roll down.
As our siblings in India are running out of Covid-19 vaccines as they battle a devastating second wave of infections, we pray Lord that somehow your children might be healed and vaccine production might allow for lives to be saved.
God, we pray for Indonesia where your children have launched search efforts for a navy submarine which has gone missing with 53 people on board. As we fear for the lives of these individuals, we pray that you may stand with the families and loved ones of those on the submarine.
God, we pray for your children in Chad who recently lost their President Idriss Déby. As your children figure out the next steps of what to do in their leadership, we pray that peace may abound and flow through each of your children there. May peace always reign and may there be peace in the hearts of your people.
God, as we celebrate Earth Day all around the world, may we remember to continually fight for justice for our Earth and to continually remember that you have gifted us with this beautiful creation. May we continually be better stewards of your creation – the beautiful forests, the deserts, wildlife, and all of the creatures which we are called to care for in everything we do. May you remind us of our connection to your creation and to all of the creatures and people who are a part of it.
Creator God, we ask for your peace and your justice to reign all over this beautiful Earth. Please, Lord, may it be so.
In your name we pray. Amen.
