Our Father, who art in heaven
hallowed be thy name
thy kingdom come
thy will be done
on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread:
–feed the hungry
–nourish the poor in spirit
–provide clean water
–assign meaningful tasks and living wages
–sustain our fields and farmers during this time of harvest
Our Father, who art in heaven
Forgive us our trespasses:
–we shun the homeless
–we forget to love our neighbors
–we use your name in vain, especially to justify war
–we covet material things
Our Father, who art in heaven
Forgive those who trespass against us:
–Aaron Alexis, a former United States Navy reservist, who shot and killed 12 people on Monday at the Navy Yard in Washington, DC
–in South Africa, where police lied about the Marikana shootings last year, in which 34 striking miners were killed
–in Pakistan and Afghanistan, where the Taliban continues to wield unpeaceful influence
–in Greece, where a neo-Nazi political party has gathered strength
Our Father, who art in heaven
Lead us not into temptation
–aid the addicted
–preserve our intent to have more peaceful and less selfish lives
–help us to not scorn or shame those whom we believe are wrong or different
Our Father, who art in heaven
Deliver us from evil:
–in Syria, where President Bashar al-Assad says he is committed to destroying his country’s chemical weapons
–in Iran, where President Hassan Rouhani says his country will never build nuclear weapons
–in India, where “honor crimes” will endure as long as citizens prefer arranged marriages within their own caste and frown upon love matches
–in Venezuela, where extremely overcrowded prison conditions result in gang violence, leaving at least 16 inmates dead this week
–in Mexico, the Caribbean, and the United States, where hurricanes threaten lives and property.
For thine is the kingdom
and the power
and the glory
forever and ever.
Amen.
