Creator God,
As the Western hemisphere enters autumn, we see the changing leaves and bold colours that remind us that beauty can emerge even in seasons of letting go. The rhythms of creation remind us that life always changes, nothing stays stagnant, and sacredness can be found in release.
But we know that letting go carries very different meanings around the world.
We pray for the people of Gaza (Palestine) where violence continues despite a ceasefire that began nearly a year ago. Even with restrictions in place, many have been wounded and others have been killed. We pray for those mourning loved ones, those searching for family members, and those simply longing for peace without fear.
Prince of Peace, we pray for Ukraine, where Russian attacks on energy infrastructure killed seven people, including a child. We pray for families and communities facing this season of uncertainty, and for all who look forward to the end of the war.
We lift up Haiti, where nearly 1.5 million people have been displaced by gang violence. For those who have been forced from their homes, for children whose education has been disrupted, and for communities longing for safety and stability.
We pray for those caught up in wars around the world, and for those who hold fast to the reasons for their fighting. We pray for Sudan where war and humanitarian crisis continues, for people in the Middle East, including Yemen, Iran, and Egypt, where conflict and regional instability continue to affect ordinary lives, economies, and communities. We ask that those with power choose paths that protect life and seek peace.
God of justice, we pray for those who are struggling to simply have a place to call home.
For Spain, where the eviction of 87-year-old Mariadel Carmen Abascal from Madrid heightened the country’s awareness of the housing crisis, prompting large protests. For France, where hundreds of thousands of public-sector workers demonstrated over purchasing power, inflation, and a proposed pay freeze, and for all others around the world who live with insecure housing and inadequate income, caught in the cycle of poverty. We know that behind every statistic is the voice of a real person who is just trying to live in safety and dignity.
We pray for those who face additional housing challenges because of chronic illness, addiction, economic injustice, or mental health struggles, especially in areas where adequate support is difficult to access. As colder weather approaches in many places around the world, may no one be left without shelter, warmth, or compassionate care.
Sustainer of Life, we pray for communities facing climate-related disasters.
For those affected by severe flooding in India, Nepal, and Thailand, where lives have been lost, people remain missing, homes have been damaged, and thousands have been displaced.
For Japan, where intense and consecutive rain has damaged crops and contributed to rising food prices.
For Mexico following Hurricane Polo, and for all communities facing increasingly dangerous storms, floods, fires, droughts, and extreme heat.
We pray for climate activists and those calling for stronger action, including those who demonstrated across France this past weekend after a summer of extreme heat, drought, and wildfire. We pray for wisdom as the United Kingdom’s Financial Conduct Authority chooses not to make climate-risk disclosures mandatory for listed companies, instead retaining a “comply or explain” approach.
Help us remember that creation is entrusted to us as a gift to be stewarded and respected, not simply as a resource to manage and exploit.
Healing God, we pray for the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the largest and deadliest Ebola outbreak continues to ravage the lives of many. We pray for all patients, families, communities, and health care professionals who struggle with fear and misinformation. We especially remember Marie-Célestin Karondwa, a senior Congolese politician who was brutally killed after publicly supporting Ebola prevention efforts and whose home was set on fire.
May courage always triumph over fear, truth overcome misinformation, and compassion reign over violence.
We pray for an end to racism, discrimination, displacement, and hostility – so often caused by fear, hatred, or prejudice. May nations work together to welcome strangers, protect the vulnerable, and build relationships rather than walls.
On September 30th, Canada commemorated the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, remembering survivors of Residential Schools, their families and descendants. We pray for Indigenous peoples in Canada and around the world who continue to live with the ongoing effects of colonialism and intergenerational trauma. May all who have settled on these lands and benefit from their citizenship in these countries, work to build relationships rooted in justice and reconciliation.
And finally, God of healing and hope, we pray for all survivors of sexualized violence.
As the news drew our attention this week to an allegation from a former student at Cornell University (U.S.A) over her experience of a sexual assault by seven men in a fraternity house, we are reminded again that sexual violence does happen in many places including university campuses, schools, public spaces, and private homes. We pray for the truth to be made clear in these situations, for safety and healing for all who have been affected, and for communities to take sexual violence seriously.
As many students, teachers, and families have just begun another school year, we pray for places where their lived experiences will be honoured, supported, and believed in safety.
God of the autumn leaves, the vibrant reds, the bold oranges, and the soft yellows, we give thanks that you always hear us and that you are aware of all that happens in our world. In moments where we don’t quite understand what is happening behind the scenes, help us to trust that you still hold the pen to the script that is being written. Thank you for your mercy and compassion, which are as steady as the seasons, and as unchangeable as time. Amen.
