Beloved, are you there
amongst the rubble and remains of thousands who lost their lives from the earthquake in Myanmar…..are you there to cradle their broken bodies with your tenderness?
Most Merciful One, send us a sign that you are there
within the devastation and crippling heartbreak of every person touched by war in Syria, Israel, Palestine, Iraq, Yemen, Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Russia, Ukraine.
Do you kiss their tears when you hear them weeping? What a great comfort that must be.
Whispering Wind, why can’t we hear you?
You told us if we are still, we will hear you, but the night is filled with the smell of blood and the threat of more violence. We long for your presence, your comfort; please make yourself known.
Were you holding their hands – the men who died while working in a coal mine in Spain? Did they feel your love completely take over their bodies as they left this earthly life? May their loved ones know that truth.
Are you hopeful, God, that the leaders of the United States of America will follow your command to “be devoted to one another in love” and to “honor one another above yourselves”? (Romans 12:10) Our hope is faltering, and we need your strength and courage to hold onto during this time of confusion and despair.
How do you cope with all of the tragedies of the world, Most Trusted Friend? Is it not too much for you to bear sometimes? We fear that we ask for you to stop our reckless and dangerous behavior when that responsibility is ours to hold. Please be present with us as we encourage one another to boldly speak the truth, to fiercely love in the midst of attack, and to nurture peace during the tumult that pervades our lives.
In the midst of tragedies around the world, remind us of the beauty that exists in the unlikeliest of places. When that beauty touches us, may the sacredness seep into our bones, bringing us ever closer to You, our Holy Companion. Amen.
