Holy One,
Creator of every nation and every people,
Breath that moved over the waters before the dawn of creation,
we come before you carrying a world that is beautiful and wounded in equal measure.
Your prophets dreamed of a day when swords would become plowshares and nations would learn war no more. Yet this week we have watched violence deepen in the Middle East as conflict between Iran and the United States threatens to draw still more people into fear and grief. We remember the people of Iran, whose cities have endured attack, and all who now wonder whether tomorrow will bring peace or another night of sirens. We remember the people of Israel and Palestine, where so many continue to mourn loved ones, search for food and shelter, and long for security that does not come at another’s expense. May those entrusted with power choose wisdom over vengeance, dialogue over domination, and courage enough to seek peace even when it seems impossible.
We pray also for Ukraine, where another week has brought air raids, destruction, and uncertainty. Sustain those who shelter underground, comfort those who grieve, and strengthen all who continue to work for a just and lasting peace.
We lift before you Sudan, where millions continue to suffer from violence, hunger, and displacement, often beyond the attention of the world’s cameras. May forgotten crises never become forgotten people. Bless humanitarian workers, peacemakers, neighbours, and strangers who refuse to let compassion grow weary.
God of creation, the earth itself cries out. We pray for communities across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas facing dangerous heat, wildfires, drought, floods, and polluted skies. Renew in us a reverence for the world you declared good. Teach us to care for forests and rivers, oceans and grasslands, not as possessions to be consumed but as gifts entrusted to every generation. May those making decisions about climate and energy place the flourishing of future children alongside the needs of today.
God of every language and culture, we give thanks for the joy that has unfolded through the FIFA World Cup. From villages and cities, refugee camps and crowded neighbourhoods, millions have gathered around televisions and radios, cheering not only for victory but for belonging. As Argentina and Spain prepare to meet in the final, remind us that healthy competition can reveal our shared humanity. May the beautiful game continue to build friendships across borders that politics so often divides.
We remember those celebrating Bastille Day in France this week, giving thanks for the enduring hope that liberty, equality, and fraternity might extend to all people. We also pray for Muslim communities preparing for the sacred remembrance of Ashura in the days ahead. Across many traditions, may remembrance deepen compassion, strengthen communities, and awaken hearts to justice and mercy.
We pray for migrants seeking safety, for refugees waiting in uncertainty, for families separated by borders, and for all who wonder whether there is still room for them in this world. Open our hearts before we harden our opinions. Help us see your image reflected in every face, every accent, every skin colour, every culture, every story.
Christ Jesus, you crossed boundaries that others defended. You welcomed those who were excluded, touched those whom society feared, and called strangers neighbours. Give your Church that same generous spirit. Where we have spoken too quickly, teach us to listen. Where we have judged, teach us humility. Where we have despaired, plant hope.
Holy Spirit, breathe through this weary world. Kindle kindness where there is cruelty, curiosity where there is suspicion, forgiveness where there is resentment, and courage where there is fear. Make us people who build bridges rather than walls, tables rather than trenches, communities rather than enemies.
Until that day when every tribe and language and people gather in your peace, keep us faithful in prayer, steadfast in hope, and abundant in love.
Amen.
