Heavenly Father,
Having just observed the holy day of Ash Wednesday – as we enter the sacred season of Lent – we come before You in humility. The ashes that marked us, remind us we are dust, and to dust we shall return. Strip away our pride, our distractions, and our indifference. Create in us clean hearts, O God, and renew steadfast spirits within us.
As this Lenten journey begins, teach us to walk with Jesus more closely—through repentance, through prayer, through fasting, and through love. Let this be a season not only of sacrifice, but of transformation. Where we are hardened, soften us. Where we are wounded, heal us. Where we are lost, lead us home.
In a world that feels fragile and uncertain, anchor us in Your mercy. As the ashes traced the cross upon our foreheads, remind us that even in death there is resurrection, even in sorrow there is hope, even in wilderness there is promise.
May this Lenten season shape us into people of compassion—quick to serve, eager to forgive, bold in justice, and constant in love. We ask, in the name of Jesus Christ, that our prayers become action, our fasting become generosity, and our repentance become renewal for the life of the world. Gracious God, may we never forget that Jesus Christ walked the road to the cross and opened for us the way to everlasting life.
We lift before You all who are suffering in the world. We pray for those grieving loved ones, those facing war and violence, those burdened by hunger, poverty, and fear. We especially remember communities struck by natural disasters—by fires that consume, by floods that overwhelm, by earthquakes that shake foundations, by storms that leave devastation behind. Be near to the brokenhearted. Shelter the displaced. Strengthen the weary. Protect the first responders and all who bring aid and relief. Be a refuge for the displaced, comfort for the grieving, strength for the rescuers, and hope for those who feel buried beneath loss.
We pray especially for those caught in war and violence in Ukraine and Russia; Israel and Gaza; Syria; Lebanon; South Sudan; Afghanistan; Columbia; Yemen and all other countries where we are unaware of their need. Hear our pleas for Palestinian families living in fear, for children who do not know safety, and for the leaders whose decisions carry heavy consequences.
Turn hearts toward peace as talks continue in Iran. Restrain evil. Raise up peacemakers filled with courage and compassion.
We pray for those burdened by illness, loneliness, anxiety, and despair. For those struggling to find work, to afford food, to keep a roof overhead. For the forgotten and the overlooked, the refugee and the prisoner, the elderly and the orphan. Draw near to each one with Your healing presence.
And, Lord, call us to action. Convict us where we have been complacent. Convict us when we are tempted to look the other way when we see our brothers and sisters in need.
Comfort those in the United States who mourn the passing of Your servant and international activist Rev. Jesse Jackson. Stir in us the same holy love that moved Rev. Jackson to see the world as his parish as he advocated for those who suffered from racial prejudice.
Make us people of scriptural holiness—quick to pray, eager to serve, generous in mercy, steadfast in justice. Let our faith be not only words spoken in worship, but love enacted in the world.
We thank you for Jesus’ words in John 16 (KJV): “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
Pour out Your Holy Spirit upon Your Church, that we may be instruments of Your grace this week: hands that serve, voices that advocate, hearts that refuse to give up on hope.
We trust not in our own strength, but in Your unfailing mercy, revealed to us in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
